Bees: A Barometer to the Earth's Environmental Stability

Bees: These amazing little creatures are so interconnected to our very existence, and yet, they are in such danger.

Thirty-five percent of hives are dying annually due to our environmental pollutants. We need to do something now, and each and everyone with a bit of property can make a difference in a bee's world.

I have two sites I came across that deserve some attention. They are the following: BeeAction.org  and Bee-Friendlier.com.

Albert Einstein said,  “Mankind will not survive the honeybees disappearance for more than five years.” 

This was quite prophetic for one of the biggest, foreboding dangers of all facing humans is the loss of the global honeybee population. Why is that? 

The consequence of a dying bee population impacts man at the highest levels on our food chain, posing an enormously grave threat to human survival. It is amazing how a creature so small can have such a huge impact on our lives.

Did you know that 70 out of the top 100 crops for our human food, which supplies around 90% of the world's nutrition, are pollinated by bees. A single bee colony can pollinate 300 million flowers each day. This consists of fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Honey bees, both wild and domestic, perform 80% of the pollination... Unbelievable!

Since 2006 beekeepers have been noticing their honeybee populations have been dying off at increasingly rapid rates. In Iowa, alone, there has been a decrease of over 70%! California's bee production has dropped nearly half in the last 6 years, and so many other states have seen a reduction, as well, such as Florida.

Chemicals, herbicides, and insecticides being used are having a horrifying effect on the bee population.  Hives are being devastated by what is known  Honeybee Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). This problem has caused such a loss that the bee phenomenon has been recognized as an urgent crisis. There are so many other maladies that bees suffer from, even through electro-magnetic cell tower emissions.  What is happening to bees is a barometer to the earth's environmental stability.

Visit the websites, plant some wild flowers even if it is in containers, do your best to avoid pesticides, herbicides, and chemicals around your home and property for the sake of bees and all of nature, and plant heirloom or GMO free seeds in your garden if at all possible. If we each cooperate with nature, we can collectively change our world and preserve the natural habitats of God's creations, as well as, our food supply. 

Be kind to nature and nature will be able to do what God intended for it to do for you.

This is an amazing video on how a community changed their world and invested in "more kindness to themselves and to the environment," as is said in the video. It goes along with Donna's post on taking care of the earth. Watch this video on how a very small group of people, who met around a kitchen table, started a revolution that, literally, changed their surroundings and their life crossing all age groups.

Pam Warhurst cofounded Incredible Edible, an initiative in Todmorden, England dedicated to growing food locally by planting on unused land throughout the community. With wit and clarity, Pam Warhurst explains how she and a team of volunteers came together to turn plots of unused land into communal vegetable gardens, and to change the outlook on food in their community. This guerilla gardening video is a witty presentation and does an excellent job of inspiring us on the topic of "propaganda gardening," as Warhurst calls it. Now, I believe, 30 or so other communities in England have, also, gone Incredible Edible, along with many others around the world.

God Commands Us to Take Care of the Earth

Since Stephen has been posting on the toxicity in our world, I can’t help but put a little spiritual slant to our posts since we're both ordained ministers. I’m not going to preach to you; however, in order to truly live in joy on this beautiful planet we all call home, we have to do our part and do the best we can to help take care of it. Why?

Do you recall  the scripture in Genesis 2:15? It says.”Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to cultivate and keep it.”

In that verse, the word “keep” in Hebrew is a very special word. It means to care for something so gently and completely, and to make sure that no harm comes to it... to cherish it as a mother would her baby. That was the command that God gave to man. That was man’s responsibility, which is now mankind's responsibility collectively.

Let’s all take notice of the things that are happening our “home,” which is the only one we have, and do what we can to “keep it”  in the scriptural sense. What we do to the earth, we do to ourselves. Let’s make sure we do our part and pass on to our children, grandchildren, and the future generations to come a beautiful, safe, healthy world in which to live and enjoy life as best as we possibly can. 

However, we can only make a difference by working together and making changes in our lifestyle NOW. We can change the way we clean our homes, raise our food, dispose of our garbage, and live respectively in regards to the environment in our own little corner of the world.

As one little girl said at the end of 20/20 TV show a few years ago hosted by Diane Sawyer, “Be nice to the earth.”

She couldn’t have said it any better. As the scriptures tell us, “And a child shall lead them...,” let us all be nice to the earth.

Toxicity in our Food, Our Homes, Our Life!

We live in a world that looks pretty on the outside, but when you look within our food, our atmosphere, our water, there is so much that we don't see that is harming our entire existence short term and long term. Nothing is as it looks.

Take a beautiful, shiny apple in a grocery store. It looks very innocuous... it looks harmless from all appearances. Watch this little video. There are several videos on the state of our world and the pollutants we exist with in the environment so I am going to put a page up that just has this information. It will be in the menu bar in the next few days so it is handy for reference.

Water: How Scarce Is This Precious Commodity?

We have been lecturing about water since the 70's. Donna and I have come to appreciate just how precious this most needed natural resource is to every human being on the planet. We have, also, come to discover just how scarce in the grand scheme of things water is, too.

This is an incredible artistic model of the earth effectively displaying the very, very small amount of of potable, drinkable, water available to every single living thing on our planet. Makes you stop and think, doesn't it? It is not  that much, is it?

And, yet, this is how much water it takes to make just one hamburger. Just keep in mind  the McDonald's Golden Arches and the increasing numbers daily

We can live without meat, fuel,  gas, etc. if we had to. Generations before us did.  All those things use an incredible amount of water to produce. So many things we produced commercially and in manufacturing uses water, and lots of it.  The production of bottled, reverse osmosis water uses a great deal of extra water to produce the incredible number of bottles that are sold.

This is so unnecessary in view of the fact that ...We can't live without water! The generations that will follow need us to wake up and be more conservative and caring about water, the environment, and the effects of commercial enterprises on our precious water supply.

Water: A Precious Commodity-Don't Waste It & Know What You're Drinking!

We have been lecturing on water for 40 years. In the last 2 1/2 years we have immersed ourselves in the subject. It is vital for life.

There is a new documentary movie, Tapped, that will be shown in Hot Springs, AR, tomorrow, Monday, at around 11:15 AM at the Malco Theater, and at other theaters around the world at various Documentary Film Festivals. This is the only showing of the week. If you can possible see it, do so.

We need to be educated. We need to know what the best water is to drink. Water is not something to waste or to commercialize and be put into plastic bottles that endanger the environment and our health. Bottled water is not fit for human consumption!

Our Precious Commodity: Water. Don't Take It for Granted

On a little different note from my recent posts, the following is a movie about water and an amazing scientist and ecologist who cared about the environment. He wanted people to be aware of what was happening to the earth by man's carelessness. He showed what a precious, vital resource water is and how man needs to begin cherishing it or face dire circumstances in the future in his writings and studies.

The research of Callum Coats in the following video takes us on a journey through the life and inventions of Austrian ecologist, Viktor Schauberger (1885-1958).

Rain Forest in Trouble

The same friend who sent us the news of the GMO's in my previous blog sent this to us, also. I have been hearing so many say, "There is no deforestation of the rain forest. We shouldn't be concerned. It's being controlled." The content of this site should be read by everyone.

Life on this planet is a delicate balance as the site discusses. The deforestation of the rainforests destroys or misplaces indigenious plants and animals, dangerously interrupting the natural cycle of life. Planting "other" trees, does not replace the life-long eco-system that preceded the new growth. That cannot be replaced. The local people are uprooted from their natural habitat and environment totally upsetting their culture, lifestyle, and heritage. If not taken care of, protected, and of concern to everyone, the demise of the natural environment in one place on Earth will eventually affect us all without exception.

Stop the Insanity: Stop Drinking Bottled Water!

The next few posts will be a series on drinking bottled water or any beverage found in plastic bottles. The count, some say, is 2,000,000 plastic bottles being disposed of every 5 minutes. Others say it is 2.5 million every hour. Either way, that's insane!

All that plastic just doesn't go away. Did you know that every bit of plastic that has ever been produced is still around and will be around for 1000 years? Staggering to think about, isn't it. Think about all the plastic that people use now and will be using on infinitum in the future. That includes the plastic water bottle you may be holding in your hand right now.

We have been told that we shouldn't be concerned about it: People recycle. Well, Captain Charles Moore, who discovered the Great Pacific Garbage Patch just above the Hawaiian islands that is twice the size of Texas and getting bigger every year, had a great comment on that in the following video. A teacher once told him how much was recycled. "Diddly.squash," she said.

The truth is, less than 5% of our refuse may be recycled. That is the refuse which is deliberately discarded at recycle depositories like you probably do. But, how many other people do you know do that? And, interestingly, bottle caps are another story. Just watch the following video by Captain Charles Moore. It makes a strong statement. More posts on this subject will follow soon.
